10 interesting facts about Joss Whedon
Joss Whedon is the man behind cult-hit TV shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. His new show Dollhouse premieres on FOX on Friday the 13th right after Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. You can get to know Joss a little bit better in our Joss Whedon section, but here are 10 interesting facts to get you started:
1. Joss Whedon is a third-generation filmmaker and got his start in the business as a writer for Roseanne.
2. Joss worked as one of four main writers drafting the final screenplay for the iconic Pixar movie, Toy Story. He was nominated for an Academy Award for this in 1996.
3. Joss created the popular X-Men supervillian known as Ord after Marvel Comics hired him to write a new series on the famed mutants called, Astonishing X-Men. Joss won an Eisner Award in 2006 for best continuing series.
4. Joss gave the world a chance to laugh during the 2008 writers’ strike, penning the surprisingly successful Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along, a 43-minute musical film available for free online and starring Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day of Buffy fame, and Nathan Fillion of Firefly fame.
5. Joss directed two episodes of The Office in 2007. The first was called Business School and involved Dwight and Creed trying to catch a loose vampire bat in the office. The second was called Branch Wars because a rival branch of Dunder Mifflin tries to hire Stanley away from the Scranton branch.
6. Joss hated how horror movies always showed the defenseless high school hottie running away screaming as the evil monster stalked her. She was always one of the first ones to die. He said this was an inspiration for Buffy the Vampire Slayer because he wanted to turn this stereotype on its head. The strong, female X-Men character Shadowcat was also a source of motivation. Joss has continued with strong female personalities in Firefly, the motion picture Serenity and of course Dollhouse.
7. Joss says his favorite movie is The Matrix, and his favorite episode that he’s produced on any show was an episode called Our Mrs. Reynolds which ran on the Firefly series. He also loves the Harry Potter movies. Unsurprisingly, his favorite character is the affable heroine Hermione.
8. After seeing her husband’s disappointment with the movie interpretation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Joss’s wife suggested he wait a while and maybe one day he would get to make a TV show. Joss dismissed this idea as “naive.”
9. “Pop quiz, hotshot. There’s a bomb on a bus. What do you do?” The credited screenwriter of Speed, Graham Yost says Joss Whedon wrote 98.9 percent of the dialogue for the film. Joss’ work was uncredited.
10. Joss was once tabbed to write a big budget film version of Wonder Woman, but creative differences led to his ouster. As of now, the project is still in development. Joss said he wanted to focus on Wonder Woman’s origin since she’s not as well known as Batman or Superman. The studio instead wanted a script set in modern day.
