Is Alpha in Dollhouse really Michael Muhney?
We have sniffed out a lead in the search for Alpha thanks to CapricornOne on Twitter. Our list of possible Alpha actors right now starts and ends with Michael Muhney. After CapricornOne’s initial tweet, I did a little digging of my own, and here’s what I turned up. A lot of people know that Muhney auditioned for the role of Agent Paul Ballard that eventually went to Tahmoh Penikett. What you might not have seen is this glowing review from Muhney about his time with Joss Whedon… check it out:
My highlight of this crazy year has been the fact that I was directed by Joss Whedon. Yes, read the previous sentence again, it’s not a type-o. I actually met with Joss around March of this year for the “Dollhouse” pilot. It was a fantastic experience and the fact that he is someone I want to work with heavily in my future, I feel that now we’re just a job away from that goal. I ended up making it through all the hoops and tested for the lead FBI character.
Joss wanted to have me and one other guy screen test over at FOX with Eliza and that was an absolute treat. When he directed me and Eliza it really gave me a glimpse into what kind of director he is (which strengthened my resolve even more to work with him in the future) on set. I really like his style and energy. I got a geeky moment (and thought, Holy Frak!) when I saw who I was testing against, as I have only a few favorite shows and he is on one of them. I feel like Joss made a very strong choice with Tahmoh and I’m excited to see the show this January. Funny how things work, I would’ve preferred to star in that show, but maybe it’s his next one. Who knows? I just know that I have only a handful of guys out there that I really admire (and can quote lines from their shows) and he is one of them. One day soon, hobbits.
After reading what Muhney had to say on his blog about Joss Whedon, it’s hard not to see him as possibly being the mysterious Alpha from Dollhouse. From the early screenshots, he even fits the character’s height, build and hair style. I’ve added two galleries at the bottom. The first one is of Michael Muhney. The second one has screenshots of Alpha from the first two episodes of Dollhouse.
Plus, Muhney can keep a secret with the best of them. The character he is perhaps best known for — Sheriff Lamb on Veronica Mars — was killed off in a surprise plot twist that no one saw coming. Amazingly, Muhney kept the secret from everyone for a month and a half. Here’s what he had to say about it in an interview with tube-talk.com:
How did everyone (OK, you) keep such a HUGE, SHOCKING secret?
Personally, it meant a lot to me for this to be a surprise. I’m glad nobody leaked it. There are so many leaks on so many shows and I just hate that. I was really worried that my final moments would come out weeks earlier. I’m so glad they didn’t.
How long have you known that the Sheriff was headed for the dirt nap?
Six weeks now. Gah! I’m glad it’s out there now. It’s a relief.
Ok, so I think I’m officially sold… but more importantly Dollhouse fans…
What do you guys think?

I still think Alan Tudyk is Alpha.
Awww, thanks A.D.! That credit was nice to wake up to …
Nice article, as you dug up everything I had researched to try to make this guess, too … nicely done. I REALLY wanted it to be one of Joss Whedon’s alumni, and considered Alan Tudyk (Firefly). But, neither the build or his demeaner quite work for the character. He would be my next best guess (and would make sense as far as why keep the identity secret), but he has another tv project being released.
David Boreanaz (Buffy and Angel) would have made the best choice for fans, but he is too old for this character. Same with Nathan Fillion (also, Firefly). However, both have thier own series now: FOX’s Bones and ABC’s Castle, respectively.
Beyond that, I looked over the other actor’s who tried out for various roles for Dollhouse … and the rest, as you can see outlined above by A.D., is how I came to conclude Michael Muhney was the best candidate for the role of Alpha.
I still may be wrong, as Michael Muhney tends to get type cast as a cop. Though, that might explain keeping this all secret, as Mr. Whedon has obeyed my 5-year rule for a successful tv series mapping the whole series out. And I would hazard the guess that Michael Muhney’s character will be introduced as a Fed or other enforcement officer for a bit before the revelation that he is, in fact, the rogue Active … Alpha.
Yeah, we have another post that will be up soon that asks if Alpha is really Alan Tudyk as others believe. I have pretty credible evidence that Tudyk will be in the series — either as Alpha or as someone else. Stay tuned.
I knew I recognized that name! Took seeing his picture for it to click. I would be almost equally excited about him or Alan Tudyk.
Whoever it is that is playing the mysterious character … even if it isn’t either of these two actors … I just hope that the payoff is BIG. Frankly, after all the hoopla, I kinda hope it is someone I haven’t even considered, and get pleasantly surprised!
It is getting too easy for me to predict these things, these days. I wanna be WOWed and go, “Man, I never saw that coming!!!”
very interesting theory indeed…
Hey all , good search you ve done man, to put as this , I bet Joss Whedon didnt make a choice yet for Alpha, dont take the photo as true for the first 2 episodes, I guess joss is Too brilliant to be pridictable like this , so I bet he is still not made a choice for Alpha yet, so it might be anyone, it might be David Boreanaz or anyone of you choice , so no one is certainly Alpha.
I would love to see David Boreanaz as Alpha , I think bones is so dull now, and he might need a change.
