Mystery solved! Alan Tudyk stars as Alpha in Dollhouse!

February 23 2009 3 Comments

tudyk_alphaDollhouse fans, the mystery is solved.  We can now definitively tell you that Alan Tudyk is the mysterious rogue doll Alpha (or Alfa based on the correct NATO spelling) in Joss Whedon’s latest gem of a TV show.

We first brought you this story Feb. 15 when we continued our series exploring who the mysterious actor playing Alpha might be.  We brought you two names — Alan Tudyk and Michael Muhney.  It turns out we didn’t have to explore much more than that because the second post nailed it.

Most Whedonite fans fell in love with Tudyk during Joss Whedon’s last TV effort, Firefly, as the wise-cracking pilot of Serenity, Hoban “Wash” Washburne.  Now it’s time to fall in love with him all over again because the devilish Alpha character is fantastically written.

When we reported on the story before, we told you how fan sites like AlanTudyk.net and AlanTudyk.org briefly had stories on their sites confirming that Tudyk joined the cast.  At the time, those sites did NOT piece together the fact that Tudyk was Alpha, and they subsequently deleted their posts.  A search of cached pages on Google turned up the evidence.

Now AlanTudyk.net is again reporting that Tudyk will appear in Dollhouse, and this time they are taking a cue from us and connecting the dots that lead to Alpha:

ATDN can now reveal that Alan will play the rogue doll Alpha in Joss Whedon’s series ‘Dollhouse’, which premiered on Fox on Friday February 13th.

The show features agents known as ‘dolls’ who can be programmed with any skill or personality. Alpha has been described as having ‘multiple personalities, fragmented and twisted from his time in the Dollhouse’. Hisname suggests that he was the first person to be engaged by those in charge of the Dollhouse. It appears that Alan has already appeared on screen, albeit obscured and in some scenes played by a double to throw viewers off the scent.

What we know about Alpha

So far we know Alpha killed many of those in the Dollhouse and carved up Dr. Claire Saunders’ face but for an unknown reason let Echo live.  Now he’s set on taking down the Dollhouse, foiling them at different turns while giving Agent Paul Ballard different bits of information about the secret fraternity of Actives.

We know that Alpha is also very good with a knife.  In the second episode, “The Target,” a flashback shows Boyd Langton looking at the body of the handler he is replacing.  The man has “surgical-like cuts” all over his body, and Langton remarks that the man who did this must have taken his time.  Instead, the head of security, Laurence Dominic informs him that they believe it took him just 9 seconds.

Based on the fact that Dr. Saunders had so many facial cuts but is still alive, that leads me to believe that she was Alpha’s first victim, and he was with her when he found the knife and started hurting people.  He may have lashed out at her and then decided that she was worthy to live.  It’s too early to tell at this point, but hopefully bigger pieces of the puzzle are filled in by the time Season 1 ends.

Alpha also killed the man who attacked Boyd in the second episode.  Boyd incapacitated the man but let him live.  While he was tied up, Alpha finished the job that Boyd started.  Some have also proposed the theory that Alpha set up the elaborate hunting trap in “The Target” to test Echo to see if she was worth to live.  It’s too early to say whether or not that’s true, but it is definitely an interesting theory.
